Makesha Lawanda Shelton-Mayala

Makesha Lawanda Shelton-Mayala, 42 of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Brinkley, passed away on Sunday, December 24 at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington.

Makesha was born June 3, 1981 in Flint, Michigan to Cathy Morris Shelton and James Shelton.

Makesha was a member of Brown Chapel CME Church in Brinkley, under the leadership of Reverend Willie Branch Jr.

Makesha was reared in Flint, Michigan and attended Flint Public Schools. She was a 1999 graduate of Northern High School. She went on to continue her education by enrolling and attending the University of Michigan, where she received a BA Degree in Business Administration in 2005. She later went on to earn a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in 2017.

Makesha was very active in her community. She was always helping anyone in need. She belonged to several community organizations geared toward financially helping her community and (Texas Take Over (TTO) Financial Group and Multi-Family Movement Organization).

Makesha had currently been employed as a Program Technician with the GSA Services Agency in Fort Worth, Texas for more than 2 years. She had previously been employed with USDA/Farm Services Agency as a Program Technician. She had also previously been employed with Arkansas Department of Workforce Services as a Program Supervisor. She had also obtained a license in Cosmetology through The Northern Skills Center in Flint, while attending high school.

Makesha was a very adventurous person. She enjoyed sky diving, zip lining, parasailing, boating, African safaris, fishing, fashion and traveling abroad. She enjoyed taking her mother on exotic vacations. She even earned a Pilot's license several years ago.

Lavern Chapmon and Steve Tolbert; her uncle Darnell "Jim Dandy" James; an aunt Mary Miller; grandparents Earnest and Joyce Ree Caldwell, Robert McKay and Inez Copeland all preceded Makesha in death.

Survivors are: her son Akili S. Mayala of Brinkley, AR; her parents: Cathy Morris-Shelton of Brinkley, AR; and James Shelton of St. Louis, MO; her brother Wayne (Laura) Shelton of Grand Prairie, TX; her sister Sheila Morris of Brinkley, AR; a special cousin Nolan Chapmon of Jackson, AL; a dear friend Katrina Horton of Flint, MI; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday evening, January 5 from 5 until 7 PM at Brown Chapel CME Church, 422 West Ash Street in Brinkley. Funeral services will be held in Saturday, January 6 at 2 PM at the Brinkley Convention Center, 1500 Weatherby Drive in Brinkley with Reverend Willie Branch Jr. officiating. Interment will take place at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Wheatley by C.J.
