Harry Gene Mayo, 81 of Holly Grove, passed away on Friday evening, October 2 at his son's home in Douglasville, Georgia.
Harry was born May 21, 1945 in Holly Grove, Arkansas to Oscar Mayo and Geraldine Peak.
Harry was a lifelong member of I John Missionary Baptist Church in Holly Grove, Arkansas, where he served as a Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday School and Church Treasurer.
Harry received his education from the Holly Grove Public School system. He was a 1964 graduate of Holly Grove Vocational High School. He went on to attend Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas. After returning from military service, he continued to pursue a higher education by attending Philander Smith College in Little Rock, where he received a degree in Social Sciences in 1970. He then went on to pursue and receive a master's degree in Secondary Education and an Education Specialty degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Harry was drafted into the United States Army. He served from 1965 until 1967 for which he received an honorable discharge.
Harry was united in holy matrimony to Savannah Middleton in September 1970. To this union three children were born, Brandon, Latita, and Harriet.
For more than 33 years Harry served as an Educator in the Holly Grove Public School System. He served as a Teacher (History), Principal and lastly Superintendent of Schools before retiring in 2004.
His wife Savannah Mayo, his parents: Oscar Mayo and Geraldine Hymond; his brothers: Carl Mayo, Darnell Mayo, and Cal Mayo; his sisters: Alformia Williams, Patricia Grayson, Gladys Jackson, Garlean Dickson and Tonya Stanfield all preceded Harry in death.
Survivors are: two sons: Brandon Mayo of Douglasville, GA; and Randy Mayo of St. Louis, MO; two daughters: Latita (Juan) Bell and Harriet (Kendall) Bones both of Douglasville, GA; grandchildren: Dominique Jone of St. Louis, MO; Denzell Mayo of Douglasville, GA; Randi Byrd of St. Louis, MO; Elexi Bailey of Houston, TX; Maisyn Guillory of Dallas, TX; Tahlen Grayson of Douglasville, GA; Nyla Bones, Jahden Bell of Douglasville, GA; Tahlar Bones of Douglasville, GA; Bradan Neaves of Douglasville, GA; Jakobi Bell of Douglasville, GA; Lionel Bates of St. Louis, MO; and Kyndall Bones of Douglasville, GA; two brothers: Harold (Diane) Mayo of Scott, LA and Charles G. Mayo of Fresno, CA; two sisters: Erma Jean Mayo of Fresno, CA and Jeweldine Gray of Stuttgart, AR; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon, October 10 at 3:00 PM at the Holly Grove High School Gymnasium, 430 Spruce Street in Holly Grove with Reverend Cedric Hawkins serving as eulogist. The pallbearers are Anthony Middleton, James Collins, Andre Lowe, Carlos Hampton, John Bennett, and Gabriel Sykes.
