Glennvester Garrett

Glennvester (Glenn) Garrett, 81 of Oaklawn, Illinois formerly of Moro (Garret Grove Community), passed away on Thursday, October 16 at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oaklawn.

While growing up in Moro, Arkansas (Garrett Grove Community), Glennvester or "Glenn" as he was also known accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and became a member of Walnut Grove AME Church in Garrett Grove. He later became a member of New Faith Baptist Church in Matteson, Illinois. Where he remained a faithful member for many years.

Glenn attended Garrett Grove Elementary School. He was a 1961 graduate of George Washington Carver in Moro, Arkansas. He went on to further his education by enrolling and attending AM&N College (currently University of Arkansas) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He graduated with the class of 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. He went on to attend Governors State University in Park Forest, Illinois in 1973, where he received a master's degree in urban Teacher Education in 1975. In 1993, he received my second master's degree in School Administration, also from Governors State University.

Glenn relocated to Chicago, Illinois in June 1965 where he lived and worked for 60 years.

Glenn was employed as a Chemist at Inmont Chemical Company in 1965 and worked there until 1971. He later took a job teaching in the Chicago Public Schools and returned to and became a Principal with the Chicago Public Schools the next year. He retired from the Chicago Public Schools after 32 years.

His parents: Sylvester and Laurntean Garrett; two brothers: Mearlen Garrett and Sterling Garrett; and a sister, Arcola Garrett-Beasley, preceded Glenn in death.

Survivors are two daughters: Felecia (Keith) Jones, of Oaklawn, IL; and LaTonya Garrett of Chicago, IL; granddaughter: Sierra Slaton of Chicago, IL; one brother: Freeman (Linda) Garrett of Aliso Viejo, CA; sisters: Myrtle Jean Page of Lancaster, TX; Geraldine Garrett of Little Rock, AR; Merida (Elihue) Washington of Sherwood, AR; Claudie (William) Phillips of Burr Ridge, IL; and Sandra (Dr. Jeffery ) Hendred of Ottumwa, Iowa; sister-in-law: Velma Garrett of Maumelle, AR; his former wife, Bessie Pruitt of Homewood, IL, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, October 25 at 11 AM at Mount Olive Ministries, 1200 North Main Street Extended in Brinkley with Dr. Jeffery D. Hendred serving as eulogist. Interment will take place at Garrett Grove Cemetery in Moro by C.J.
